Mary Barra and David Cordani are prominent American corporate executives, but the public record does not establish that they are relatives, spouses, business partners or longtime colleagues. Barra is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, while Cordani became Executive Chair of The Cigna Group on July 1, 2026, after nearly 17 years as its CEO.

The relationship question is clearer than some search results suggest. Institutional sources identify Tony Barra as Mary Barra’s husband and Sherry Cordani as David Cordani’s wife. Their documented careers also developed at separate companies. The strongest connection between Mary Barra and David Cordani is their presence in the wider U.S. business-leadership community, including activity associated with Business Roundtable.

Are Mary Barra and David Cordani Related?

No authoritative public source reviewed establishes a family relationship between Mary Barra and David Cordani. That is the most accurate way to state the evidence: public records do not show them as relatives, although such records cannot prove that no distant private genealogical connection exists.

Their marriages are separately documented. In a 2022 commencement address at Duke University, Barra said she met her husband Tony during her early years working at General Motors. Stanford Graduate School of Business has also referred to Tony as her husband.

The Cigna Group, meanwhile, has publicly identified Sherry as David Cordani’s wife. There is no reliable evidence that Cordani and Barra are married to each other.

Nor do their career records show a shared employer or business partnership. Barra spent her career at General Motors. Cordani joined Cigna in 1991 and built his career there.

Mary Barra’s Career at General Motors

Barra’s association with GM began long before she became its chief executive. She joined the company in 1980 as a co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division while studying at General Motors Institute, now Kettering University.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1985 and later completed an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990. Her professional experience inside GM eventually ranged across engineering, manufacturing, human resources, product development, purchasing and supply-chain management.

In her Duke commencement speech, Barra recalled that one of her earliest jobs involved inspecting fenders and hood panels. It is a useful detail because her later executive career was built on decades of direct exposure to the company’s industrial operations rather than an outside appointment to its leadership team.

Before becoming CEO, she served as executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain.

Barra became GM’s chief executive on January 15, 2014. Her appointment made her the first woman to lead a major global automaker. On January 4, 2016, she also became chair of GM’s board.

As of September 23, 2026, General Motors continues to identify Barra as both Chair and CEO.

The Early Tests of Barra’s CEO Tenure

Barra took over GM shortly before the company faced intense scrutiny over its ignition-switch recalls. The defect and the company’s earlier handling of it became the subject of investigations, litigation and a U.S. Justice Department case.

The chronology matters. The underlying safety problems and failures to disclose them predated Barra’s tenure as CEO, so it would be inaccurate to attribute their origin personally to her. But responding to the crisis became one of the first major tests of her leadership after taking the top job.

Her later tenure has coincided with a much broader transformation of the automobile industry. Electric vehicles, software, connected services and automated-driving technology increasingly became part of the competitive landscape alongside traditional vehicle engineering and manufacturing.

GM has described electrification, software and personal autonomous driving as important parts of its strategy under Barra. At the same time, the company has had to balance those investments with its existing vehicle business, production costs and changing customer demand.

GM’s Shift on Autonomous Driving

One of the clearest examples of that balancing act came in December 2024, when GM announced that it would stop funding Cruise’s development of a standalone robotaxi business.

Rather than abandoning autonomous-driving technology altogether, GM said it would redirect development toward autonomous features for personal vehicles. The decision marked a significant change from the company’s earlier ambitions for Cruise as a commercial robotaxi operation.

By 2026, Barra’s stated management priorities included strengthening GM’s vehicle portfolio, expanding software and services, reducing losses associated with electric vehicles and improving operating efficiency. Those are company-stated priorities rather than an independent assessment of whether each strategy will succeed.

David Cordani’s Path to Cigna

Cordani followed a similarly long internal career path, but in health services rather than manufacturing.

He earned a BBA from Texas A&M University and later an MBA from the University of Hartford. Texas A&M materials also describe his early career at Coopers & Lybrand before he entered Cigna’s leadership-development program.

Cordani joined Cigna in 1991. Over the following years, he held positions spanning finance, operations, marketing and health-care management. His senior roles included President of Cigna HealthCare, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Customer Segments and Marketing.

His appointment as CEO has sometimes been dated to January 2010 because that was the transition originally announced in June 2009. The precise effective date, however, was December 25, 2009, according to a later SEC filing and Cigna’s subsequent proxy materials.

He became chair of Cigna’s board in January 2022.

Express Scripts and Cigna’s Expansion

One of the largest corporate events of Cordani’s tenure was Cigna’s acquisition of Express Scripts.

When Cigna announced the transaction in March 2018, it described the deal as worth approximately $67 billion, including about $15 billion of assumed debt. SEC accounting records later reported $52.8 billion in merger consideration.

Those figures describe different measures and should not be treated as competing versions of the same purchase price. The larger figure reflects the announced transaction value including assumed debt, while the later figure refers to accounting consideration recorded for the merger.

The transaction closed in December 2018 and greatly expanded Cigna’s position in pharmacy-benefit and health-services businesses.

In September 2020, Cigna launched Evernorth, bringing together a range of health-services capabilities under a separate brand. Evernorth subsequently became a central part of The Cigna Group’s business alongside Cigna Healthcare.

When Cigna announced Cordani’s succession plan in 2026, the company said that during his tenure it had grown from about 46 million customers and $18 billion in revenue to roughly 180 million customer relationships and $275 billion in revenue, while producing more than 750% total shareholder return. Those figures are Cigna’s own retrospective description of the period and are best treated as company-reported measures rather than an independent judgment on Cordani’s performance.

David Cordani Is No Longer Cigna’s CEO

Cordani’s current title is important because many older profiles still describe him as Cigna’s chief executive.

The Cigna Group announced in March 2026 that Brian C. Evanko would succeed Cordani as CEO. The transition took effect on July 1, 2026.

Cordani moved to the role of Executive Chair of The Cigna Group’s Board of Directors. Cigna’s post-transition financial reporting continued to identify Evanko as CEO and Cordani as Executive Chair.

That means descriptions of Cordani as Cigna’s current CEO are outdated as of September 2026.

Their Business Roundtable Overlap

Business Roundtable provides the clearest documented professional context in which the two names can reasonably be discussed together.

Barra was elected to chair the organization for a term beginning January 1, 2022. Dated Business Roundtable announcements show that she served through the end of 2023, with Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins succeeding her on January 1, 2024.

By 2026, Barra remained on Business Roundtable’s board as a past chair and at-large member.

Cordani has also participated in Business Roundtable activities. In 2024 he was associated with its Mental Health Initiative, including employer-focused work on workforce mental health. Business Roundtable material from that period documents his involvement in the initiative.

This shared organizational sphere does not establish that Barra and Cordani ran a project together, served on the same corporate board or maintained a personal relationship. It simply places both executives within the broader network of leaders from large U.S. corporations.

Two Long Internal Careers, Different Industries

A genuine similarity between Barra and Cordani is the way each reached the top of a major company after spending decades inside it.

Barra entered GM as a student worker in 1980 and moved through technical, manufacturing and management jobs before becoming CEO in 2014. Her responsibilities eventually covered areas as different as human resources, product development and supply chains.

Cordani joined Cigna in 1991 and likewise moved through multiple operating and executive positions before becoming CEO in 2009.

The resemblance ends at a fairly broad level. Their industries demanded different expertise and exposed them to different strategic pressures. Barra has dealt with manufacturing, vehicle safety, labor, global supply chains, electrification and automotive software. Cordani’s work centered on health benefits, pharmacy services, insurance economics and the expansion of health-service businesses.

That makes their parallel career structures noteworthy, but it does not amount to evidence of a shared corporate career.

Personal Lives and Publicly Verified Spouses

Only limited personal information is necessary to answer the relationship question.

Barra has publicly referred to Tony Barra as her husband. She has said that they met during the period when she was participating in GM’s co-op program. Stanford Graduate School of Business has independently identified Tony as her husband as well.

The Cigna Group has identified Sherry Cordani as David Cordani’s wife. David and Sherry Cordani have also been publicly associated with charitable activity through their family foundation.

There is no need to infer anything further about either executive’s private family life to establish the central point: reliable institutional sources identify different spouses.

Executive Pay Is Not the Same as Net Worth

Public company filings provide detailed compensation figures for both executives, but they do not establish either person’s complete net worth.

GM’s 2026 proxy reported that Barra received a base salary of $2.1 million for 2025 and total SEC-reported compensation of $29,895,868. The same proxy reported 1,658,807 GM common shares beneficially owned at the relevant reporting date, representing less than 1% of the company’s outstanding stock.

Those figures are dated disclosures. They should not be treated as a real-time count of her current holdings or as a measure of her total personal wealth.

Cigna’s 2026 proxy reported a 2025 base salary of $1.6 million for Cordani and total SEC-reported compensation of $22,866,134.

Again, executive compensation is not the same thing as net worth. No authoritative public accounting reviewed provides a complete valuation of either Barra’s or Cordani’s personal assets and liabilities, so numerical net-worth claims based on biography sites would be speculative.

Where Mary Barra and David Cordani Stand in 2026

As of September 23, 2026, Mary Barra remains Chair and CEO of General Motors. She has led the company since January 2014 and chaired its board since January 2016.

David Cordani’s role has changed more recently. After serving as Cigna CEO from December 25, 2009 until July 1, 2026, he is now Executive Chair of The Cigna Group. Brian Evanko is the company’s CEO.

The evidence therefore supports a straightforward explanation of why Mary Barra and David Cordani may appear together in searches. They are two long-serving executives who reached the top of major American corporations and participated in some of the same broader business-leadership circles. The public record does not establish a family relationship, marriage, shared employer or business partnership between them.
