Miguel Patricio and Albert Bourla are not publicly known to be relatives, business partners or longtime colleagues. Their clearest documented connection is professional comparison: both became chief executives of major U.S.-listed companies in 2019, and both appeared in Feigen Advisors’ “S&P 250 New CEO Class of 2019.” Bourla became Pfizer CEO on January 1, while Patricio took over at Kraft Heinz on June 25.

Their careers otherwise developed along very different lines. Patricio built his experience across consumer goods, beverages, marketing and packaged food. Bourla trained as a veterinarian and spent decades inside Pfizer before reaching the top job. As of September 28, 2026, Patricio is a director of Anheuser-Busch InBev, while Bourla remains Pfizer’s Chairman and CEO.

What connects Miguel Patricio and Albert Bourla?

The most useful way to understand Miguel Patricio and Albert Bourla is as two executives who reached similar corporate positions through contrasting careers.

There is no public confirmation of a family relationship between them, and their official career histories do not show a shared employer, joint business venture or sustained professional partnership. Patricio’s major employers have included Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, Philip Morris, Ambev, AB InBev and Kraft Heinz. Bourla joined Pfizer in 1993 and built almost his entire corporate career inside the pharmaceutical company.

There is, however, a genuine historical reason to place their names in the same business context. Feigen Advisors’ 2020 New CEO Report included both executives in its S&P 250 class of chief executives who took office during 2019.

That comparison is more meaningful than suggesting a personal connection that has not been established. Patricio represented an outside consumer-goods leader brought into Kraft Heinz. Bourla represented a long-serving internal executive promoted after roughly 25 years at Pfizer.

Who is Miguel Patricio?

Miguel Nuno da Mata Patricio is a Portuguese business executive best known for leading Kraft Heinz from 2019 through the end of 2023 and for his earlier career at Ambev and AB InBev.

He studied Business Administration at Fundação Getulio Vargas in São Paulo. Before joining the brewing industry, he held senior positions at Philip Morris, Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson.

Patricio entered Ambev in the late 1990s. Later AB InBev records give 1998 as his entry year, although one older Ambev filing says 1999. The discrepancy has never been clearly explained, so the broader late-1990s description is the safest account.

From marketing to international management

Patricio’s career initially centered on marketing, but it expanded into large regional operating roles.

Historical AB InBev filings show that he became Vice President of Marketing for North America in January 2005. In January 2006, he became Zone President for North America. Two years later, in January 2008, he moved to Shanghai as Zone President for Asia Pacific.

In July 2012, he became AB InBev’s Global Chief Marketing Officer, a role he held through 2018. That period placed him at the center of a global portfolio that included some of the brewing industry’s best-known brands.

The chronology matters because AB InBev’s current biography gives slightly different dates for his North American leadership. The older corporate filings, written closer to the events, place his North America presidency from 2006 until his move to Asia Pacific in 2008.

Patricio at Kraft Heinz

Kraft Heinz announced in April 2019 that Patricio would become CEO on July 1. The company later moved the effective date forward to June 25, 2019, making that the correct start date.

He arrived at a difficult moment for the food company. Kraft Heinz was facing questions about brand investment, growth and the long-term limits of a strategy heavily associated with cost cutting. Patricio’s background in consumer marketing gave the company a different kind of leader from the executives who had preceded him.

In September 2020, Kraft Heinz formally unveiled a new operating model. More than 55 product categories were reorganized into six consumer-focused platforms, and the company announced plans to increase marketing and advertising spending by 30%.

The plan also emphasized portfolio management and greater investment behind selected brands. One prominent example came in 2021, when Kraft Heinz completed the sale of its nuts business, including most Planters products, to Hormel Foods for $3.35 billion in cash.

Those actions were part of a broader effort to reshape Kraft Heinz, but they should not be simplified into a claim that Patricio single-handedly “saved” or “turned around” the company. Kraft Heinz’s performance reflected many factors, including pricing, consumer demand, inflation, portfolio choices, cost management and changes in the broader food market.

Patricio added the role of Kraft Heinz chair in May 2022 while remaining CEO.

In August 2023, the company announced that Carlos Abrams-Rivera would succeed him. Abrams-Rivera became CEO on January 1, 2024, and Patricio moved into a non-executive chair position.

What is Miguel Patricio doing now?

Patricio’s Kraft Heinz board role has ended.

This point is worth stating clearly because some recent online biographies still describe him as a current Kraft Heinz director. Kraft Heinz’s own 2026 proxy described him as its retiring Executive Chair, and he was not among the ten directors elected by shareholders at the company’s May 14, 2026 annual meeting. The current Kraft Heinz board page also does not list him.

His present public-company role is with AB InBev. On April 29, 2026, shareholders appointed Patricio to the brewer’s board for a four-year term ending after the 2030 annual meeting.

Another outdated point concerns Kraft Heinz’s proposed corporate separation. The company announced a plan in September 2025 to divide into two publicly traded businesses, but work on that process was paused in February 2026. By the June 2026 quarter, Kraft Heinz was saying that both the timing and eventual completion of the separation remained uncertain.

Who is Albert Bourla?

Albert Bourla is a Greek-born veterinarian and pharmaceutical executive who has spent more than three decades at Pfizer.

He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, and studied at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s Veterinary School. He earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Ph.D. in the Biotechnology of Reproduction.

That scientific background shaped the beginning of his career. Bourla joined Pfizer Animal Health in Greece in 1993 as Technical Director.

His rise to the top of Pfizer was gradual rather than the result of an external CEO hire.

From animal health to Pfizer’s executive suite

Bourla moved to Pfizer’s global headquarters in New York in 2001, taking a U.S. marketing role in Animal Health. He later held positions in business development and international management, including responsibility for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

He then moved further into Pfizer’s human-health businesses. His roles included leadership of Established Products and later the company’s Vaccines, Oncology and Consumer Healthcare operations.

By 2016, Bourla was leading Pfizer Innovative Health, an important part of the company’s portfolio. He became Chief Operating Officer effective January 1, 2018.

Later that year, Pfizer announced that he would succeed Ian Read as CEO. Bourla took office on January 1, 2019.

He added the position of chairman one year later, on January 1, 2020, while remaining chief executive.

As of September 28, 2026, Pfizer still identifies Bourla as Chairman and CEO. A September 16, 2026 SEC filing also carries that title.

Bourla and the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

Bourla became far more widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Pfizer partnered with German biotechnology company BioNTech to develop and commercialize an mRNA vaccine.

The distinction between corporate leadership and scientific authorship matters here. Bourla was Pfizer’s CEO during the program, but he was not the vaccine’s sole inventor or developer. The work involved Pfizer, BioNTech, scientists, clinical teams, manufacturing groups and regulators.

On December 11, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the first American emergency-use authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine, covering the Pfizer-BioNTech product for people aged 16 and older.

On August 23, 2021, the FDA granted full approval to the vaccine under the brand name Comirnaty, making it the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive full U.S. approval.

The pandemic made Bourla one of the pharmaceutical industry’s most visible executives, but Pfizer’s strategic challenges did not end with COVID-19. As pandemic-related product demand declined, the company had to build new sources of growth.

Pfizer after the pandemic

Two large acquisitions have helped define the next phase of Bourla’s tenure.

In December 2023, Pfizer completed its acquisition of Seagen, a biotechnology company focused on cancer medicines, for approximately $43 billion in enterprise value. The transaction expanded Pfizer’s oncology portfolio and added Seagen’s expertise in antibody-drug conjugates, treatments designed to deliver cancer-killing agents more directly to tumor cells.

Pfizer made another major move in November 2025 when it completed its acquisition of Metsera. The company described the deal as carrying an enterprise value of about $7 billion, with former Metsera shareholders also eligible for a contingent value right worth up to $20.65 per share if specified milestones are achieved.

Metsera gave Pfizer a larger position in obesity and metabolic disease, an area that has become one of the pharmaceutical sector’s most closely watched markets.

By 2026, Pfizer was publicly emphasizing oncology along with obesity and metabolic disease as important parts of its strategy. Those priorities describe where the company is investing; they do not guarantee the outcome of future drug-development programs.

Bourla’s recognition, citizenship and compensation

Bourla received the Genesis Prize in 2022, with the awarding organization citing his leadership during the development of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

He has also spoken publicly about becoming a U.S. citizen. In a PBS Firing Line interview, Bourla described himself as “Greek by birth, American by choice.”

His compensation is disclosed in Pfizer’s regulatory filings. For 2025, Pfizer reported a base salary of $1.8 million for Bourla and total compensation of $27,585,301.

Those numbers describe different things. Salary is his fixed cash pay. Total compensation includes other elements reported under SEC rules, such as stock awards and incentive compensation. Neither figure should be treated as a measure of his personal net worth.

Two very different routes to the CEO office

The contrast between Patricio and Bourla is sharper than the connection between them.

Patricio built a career by moving across companies, markets and consumer sectors. His route included marketing, beverage operations, regional leadership and global brand management before he was recruited to lead Kraft Heinz.

Bourla followed an almost opposite model. He began with scientific training, joined Pfizer in animal health and then spent decades advancing through different divisions of the same company.

Patricio’s background made him primarily a consumer and brand executive before he became a CEO. Bourla’s background combined veterinary science with commercial and operational management inside a research-driven pharmaceutical company.

Both reached the top of large public companies in 2019, but the similarity largely ends there.

Why some online profiles of Patricio are outdated

Several biographical details about Patricio have changed quickly enough to create confusion online.

The first is his Kraft Heinz CEO start date. July 1, 2019 was the date originally announced, but Kraft Heinz subsequently accelerated the appointment to June 25.

The second is his current Kraft Heinz board status. Some profiles still list him as a director, but Kraft Heinz’s own 2026 governance records show that he is no longer on the board.

A third source of confusion is his older AB InBev chronology. Current biography material gives dates for his North American presidency that differ from historical corporate filings. The contemporary records place him in North American marketing in 2005, as Zone President from 2006, and in Asia Pacific from 2008.

These distinctions do not change the broad shape of his career, but they matter in a profile built around current roles and exact chronology.
