Annie Martell, also known publicly as Annie Denver, is best known as John Denver’s first wife and the woman who inspired “Annie’s Song.” But her documented story begins in Minnesota, before Denver became one of the biggest singer-songwriters of the 1970s, and continues long after their marriage ended.

Martell grew up in St. Peter, Minnesota, attended Gustavus Adolphus College there and later helped shape the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen. In a 2022 interview with Mobituaries, she confirmed the central fact behind her fame in a few words: “He wrote it for me.”

Growing up in Minnesota

Martell grew up in St. Peter, a small Minnesota city that is also home to Gustavus Adolphus College. She later attended Gustavus and studied art education. Minnesota Monthly’s account of John Denver’s Minnesota years places her there as an art-education student when Denver entered her life.

Some online biographies give Martell a precise birth date and birthplace, but those details have circulated mainly through biographical databases rather than authoritative public records. They are better left unstated.

How Annie Martell met John Denver

Martell met John Denver during the period when he was performing with the Mitchell Trio. In her 2022 interview, she recalled being involved in a campus production when Denver noticed her. She remembered wearing blue jeans, a flannel shirt and penny loafers while carrying signs during the performance.

Denver later returned for another college engagement and asked her out. Their relationship moved quickly: according to Martell’s recollection, he met her parents and proposed roughly nine months after their first date.

Regional reporting places their first meeting in 1966. The couple married on June 9, 1967, at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter, according to Minnesota Monthly.

Their early married life was considerably less glamorous than Denver’s later fame might suggest. They spent time in Chicago and Minnesota, and Martell worked selling baby clothes at a Minneapolis department store. In the Mobituaries interview, she also recalled the abrupt change that came when Denver’s songwriting began producing serious royalty income: after one early payment, the couple bought both a Porsche and an original Tiffany lamp.

Moving to Aspen and becoming part of Denver’s rise

John Denver’s career accelerated rapidly in the early 1970s. By 1971, he and Annie had moved to Aspen, Colorado, the place that would become closely associated with both his music and public image.

As Denver spent more time touring and recording, Martell experienced the consequences of a career that increasingly kept him away from home. The couple nevertheless built a family together, adopting two children, Zak, also known as Zachary, and Anna Kate. Denver’s official biography names both among his children.

An archival Getty photograph documents Annie and John together at the 20th Annual Grammy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on February 23, 1978, during the height of Denver’s fame.

Why “Annie’s Song” was written for her

“Annie’s Song” remains the strongest link between Martell and Denver in popular culture.

Martell has personally confirmed that Denver wrote the song for her. The account she gave in 2022 places its creation during a difficult period in their marriage, when Denver was skiing in Aspen and began composing the song while riding a ski lift.

The exact year in which he wrote it is less certain. Some accounts place the composition in 1973 and others in 1974. What is clear is that the recording was released in 1974 and became one of Denver’s signature hits.

Martell’s own description of the song is more expansive than the idea of a simple romantic dedication. Although she confirmed that Denver wrote it for her, she said she came to understand it as a song about love and nature more broadly.

That distinction helps explain why “Annie’s Song” outlived the marriage that inspired it. Its public meaning eventually became much larger than the private circumstances in which it was created.

Family life and the end of the marriage

By the early 1980s, the marriage was ending. The 2022 Mobituaries account says Martell filed for divorce on the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary, which would place the filing in 1982.

Martell has not offered a long public account of why she left. Asked in 2022 whether the divorce had been necessary, she answered that it had.

Denver himself later acknowledged problems that had affected the marriage, including long absences and infidelity. His 1994 autobiography, Take Me Home, also described darker episodes from the breakdown of the relationship. A contemporary review of the autobiography reported that Denver recounted almost choking his first wife and attacking household furniture with a chainsaw. A Kirkus review of the memoir also refers to an angry chainsaw episode.

Those details are sometimes presented online as revelations made by Martell decades later. They were not. The incidents were already part of the public discussion around Denver’s own memoir in 1994.

There is also a small but important chronology issue. Some accounts give 1982 as the year of the divorce, while others use 1983. The better-supported point is that Martell filed in 1982; without relying on an inspected court decree, the precise date of final legal dissolution should not be stated more definitively.

Annie Martell after John Denver

Martell did not disappear completely from public life after the divorce, although she was far less visible than her former husband.

After Denver died in a plane crash in October 1997, she spoke publicly about him. Contemporary coverage of a 1997 CBS interview records Martell discussing Denver only days after his death.

That matters because some recent videos have claimed that she remained silent for 25 years and only began speaking about him in 2022. That account is incorrect. In addition to her 1997 CBS appearance, Martell gave a recorded phone interview in 1999.

The 1999 interview has created another source of confusion. It was published as part of The PJRchive podcast on May 21, 2026, but the episode listing identifies it specifically as a 1999 recording. It should therefore not be treated as a new interview describing Martell’s life in 2026.

Her role in the John Denver Sanctuary

One of Martell’s clearest public contributions after Denver’s death was her involvement with the John Denver Sanctuary in Aspen.

According to the Aspen Chamber’s history of the sanctuary, Aspen parks manager Jeff Woods approached Martell in the spring of 1998 about creating a place connected to Denver’s life and environmental interests. The 4.5-acre site was officially dedicated on August 15, 1998, with later phases and expansions developing the sanctuary further.

Martell and Woods continued working on the project over many years. By the mid-2010s, local reporting described the sanctuary as the product of a collaboration stretching back nearly two decades.

The site combines landscaped gardens, native plants, water features and stones engraved with lyrics associated with Denver. It remains part of Aspen’s public park system, as shown on the City of Aspen’s current John Denver Sanctuary page.

That work gives Martell a public role beyond being the inspiration for one of Denver’s songs. She helped shape a physical memorial connected to his music, environmental interests and relationship with Colorado.

What is known about Annie Martell today?

The most recent contemporary public interview documented here is Martell’s October 2022 appearance with Mo Rocca for CBS and Mobituaries. CBS’s report shows her at the John Denver Sanctuary discussing Denver, the song written for her and the life they once shared.

That appearance does not establish where she lives now, what work she currently does or whether she has remarried. Those aspects of her present private life are not publicly confirmed strongly enough to state as fact.

The same caution applies to online claims about her net worth, current profession and formal involvement in John Denver’s estate. Her documented role in the sanctuary does not mean that she manages Denver’s music catalog or estate, and there is no sound basis for assigning her a personal fortune from internet estimates.

What can be said with confidence is more meaningful than those speculative details. Annie Martell was part of John Denver’s life before and during his rise to international fame, was the person for whom he wrote “Annie’s Song,” raised two children with him and later played a substantial role in creating one of Aspen’s enduring public memorials to his life.
