Luther Vandross had three older siblings: two sisters, Patricia Vandross and Ann Vandross, and one brother, Charles Vandross. The celebrated American R&B singer was the youngest of four children born to Luther Vandross Sr. and Mary Ida Vandross in New York City.

All three siblings died before Luther, who passed away on July 1, 2005, aged 54. Their family relationship was documented in a 2005 Washington Post obituary, which confirmed that he had two older sisters and one older brother.

Of his siblings, Patricia had the clearest connection to the music industry. She was an original member of the Crests, a New York doo-wop group whose rehearsals became part of Luther’s childhood surroundings.

Key takeaways

  • Luther Vandross had three siblings: Patricia, Ann and Charles, all older than him.
  • Patricia Vandross was a singer and an original member of the Crests, although she left before the group recorded its hit “16 Candles.”
  • Ann Vandross was Luther’s older sister, identified by longtime friend and collaborator Fonzi Thornton in a published interview.
  • Charles Vandross was Luther’s only brother. Genealogical records also identify him as Charles Anthony Vandross.
  • None of Luther’s siblings outlived him. All three had died before July 1, 2005, according to contemporary Associated Press reporting.

Patricia Vandross: Luther’s sister who sang with the Crests

Patricia Vandross was the most publicly documented of Luther’s siblings. During the 1950s, she became an original member of the Crests, a doo-wop vocal group formed in New York.

The group was notable for its racially integrated lineup, which included Johnny Maestro, J. T. Carter and Patricia, whose surname sometimes appeared as Van Dross in historical accounts.

Patricia participated in the Crests’ early recording period. In 1957, the group recorded “Sweetest One” and “My Juanita” for Joyce Records.

However, Patricia was not part of the lineup that recorded “16 Candles,” the group’s best-known hit. She had left before the Crests made their later recordings for Coed Records.

That distinction is established in The Johnny Maestro Story, an interview-based history of the Crests, published in 2010.

Patricia’s musical activities also brought rehearsals into the Vandross family home.

Members of the original Crests recalled practicing there while Luther was a young boy. Their accounts describe him interrupting rehearsals, offering a glimpse of his early exposure to working vocal performers.

Luther himself discussed his sister’s involvement with the Crests in a 1986 Washington Post interview.

These recollections establish that professional singing was part of his childhood environment. They do not, however, establish that Patricia formally trained him or directed his later career.

Ann Vandross: Luther’s older sister

Ann Vandross was Luther’s other older sister. Unlike Patricia, she did not have a similarly documented public music career.

One of the clearest personal references to Ann comes from singer Fonzi Thornton, Luther’s longtime friend and musical collaborator.

In an interview published on Luther Vandross’s official website on April 13, 2012, Thornton recalled his teenage years in East Harlem.

He explained that Luther’s sister Ann lived across the street from him during that period.

Thornton also discussed how he first met Luther through someone associated with his church. His account places Ann within their shared New York neighborhood, although it does not say that she personally introduced the two singers.

Ann died before Luther’s death in 2005. Details of her independent professional life are less extensively documented than Patricia’s involvement with the Crests.

Charles Vandross: Luther’s older brother

Charles Vandross was Luther’s only brother and the third of his older siblings.

Some genealogical records, including entries on MyHeritage and Ancestry, identify him by the fuller name Charles Anthony Vandross. This may explain why certain biographies refer to Luther’s brother simply as Anthony rather than Charles.

The expanded name appears in genealogical summaries, although it has not been independently established through an authenticated civil record.

Charles also died before Luther, but accounts of his exact death year differ.

Some online biographies describe Charles as a professional musician or suggest that he played a significant role in Luther’s early career. Those descriptions lack the direct historical support available for Patricia’s work with the Crests and should not be treated as established facts.

The reliably documented family history identifies Charles as Luther’s older brother without establishing a comparable public musical career.

Did any of Luther Vandross’s siblings survive him?

No. Patricia, Ann and Charles had all died before Luther Vandross passed away on July 1, 2005.

An Associated Press obituary published by CBS News confirmed that his two sisters and brother had predeceased him.

Luther’s mother, Mary Ida Vandross, was still living when he died. She had experienced the deaths of her husband and all four of her children.

In an August 2006 Reuters interview, Mary Ida spoke publicly about those family losses while raising awareness of diabetes.

Luther also had surviving extended family members, including nieces and nephews, at the time of his death.

Although none of his siblings lived to see the years after 2005, Patricia’s documented recordings and her involvement with the original Crests remain an identifiable part of the musical surroundings in which Luther Vandross grew up.
