Marlene Knaus is best known as the first wife of three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda. The couple married in 1976, had two sons, Lukas and Mathias, and legally divorced in 1991. Reliable documentation of Knaus’s early life is limited. No authoritative source located in the public record establishes a definitive birth date or birthplace, and later online biographies disagree on both.
There is, however, stronger evidence of a Chilean connection. In a 1977 interview with El Gráfico, Lauda said that Knaus’s mother was Chilean. A later report by Diario de Valdivia stated that Knaus grew up in Valdivia in southern Chile and attended the city’s German school.
That local report also described her as being of Austrian origin and referred to her as a model and socialite. Those descriptions provide some basis for discussing her public life before Lauda, but they do not support the much more elaborate fashion biographies that have appeared online. No dependable record has surfaced establishing major modelling campaigns, agency representation or the frequently repeated characterization of Knaus as an international fashion icon.
Before meeting Lauda, Knaus had been in a relationship with actor Curd Jürgens, according to both The Guardian and the historical El Gráfico account.
Meeting Niki Lauda and marrying in 1976
Lauda met Knaus in 1975, during the period in which he was becoming Formula One’s dominant driver. He won his first world championship that year with Ferrari.
They married in 1976. An exact wedding date is not firmly established in the strongest available sources, but Lauda later recalled that his catastrophic German Grand Prix accident came roughly three months after the wedding.
The timing placed Knaus at the center of the most dramatic episode of Lauda’s career.
On 1 August 1976, Lauda crashed at the Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix. His Ferrari caught fire, leaving him with severe burns and significant lung injuries. Despite the seriousness of his condition, he returned to Formula One competition about six weeks later.
Knaus supported him during his recovery, according to The Guardian. Lauda’s own later accounts also make clear that the accident profoundly affected her.

Knaus’s reaction to Lauda’s determination to resume racing is one area where surviving accounts differ slightly.
In the 1977 El Gráfico interview, Lauda recalled intense discussions between them and indicated that Knaus did not want him to continue racing after the Nürburgring accident. Decades later, however, he gave a somewhat different emphasis. Speaking to OE24 in 2013, he said that she had never pressured him to stop.
The two accounts are not necessarily contradictory. Taken together, they suggest that Knaus was deeply concerned about the danger and had reservations about his return, while ultimately leaving the decision to him.
Lauda’s comeback became one of Formula One’s most famous stories. He returned only weeks after suffering injuries that had placed his life at risk, continued competing for the 1976 championship and later won further world titles in 1977 and 1984.
For Knaus, however, the importance of that period is less about sporting statistics than about the personal consequences of living alongside a driver whose willingness to accept extreme risk was central to his career.
Family life, separation and divorce
Knaus and Lauda had two sons, Lukas and Mathias Lauda.
Mathias later followed his father into motor racing, competing professionally in categories including endurance and touring-car racing. Lukas has remained considerably less visible publicly.
Although Knaus and Lauda were legally married until 1991, their relationship appears to have ended earlier in practical terms. Richard Williams, writing in The Guardian, reported that they were separated about five years after their 1976 wedding.

Diario de Valdivia referred to her as a model and socialite, which provides a reasonable basis for describing her that way with attribution. Her later public contributions are also relatively scarce, though it would be inaccurate to say she never spoke publicly about Lauda.

A contemporary review by Zwischengas identified Knaus among roughly 40 people who contributed perspectives on Lauda and discussed memories she shared about their life together, including their time on Ibiza.

How Rush brought Marlene Knaus back into public view
Ron Howard’s 2013 film Rush introduced Knaus to a much wider audience decades after the events it dramatized.
The film focuses principally on the Formula One rivalry between Lauda, played by Daniel Brühl, and James Hunt, played by Chris Hemsworth. Alexandra Maria Lara portrayed Knaus.
Lara later explained that she did not meet Knaus while preparing for the role. Instead, she spoke with Lauda about his former wife and their relationship.
That matters when separating the real Knaus from the movie character. Lara specifically acknowledged uncertainty about whether one memorable sequence depicting Lauda and Knaus meeting and hitching a ride together actually happened as shown. She understood that they had met after a party, but she could not confirm that the film’s detailed version of the encounter was factual.
Rush is therefore useful for understanding why contemporary audiences became interested in Knaus, but it should not be treated as a documentary record of her life.
Her relationship with Lauda after their marriage
Although their marriage ended years before Lauda’s death, the available evidence suggests that Knaus continued to occupy an important place in his life.
Lauda referred to her simply and publicly as “my first wife” in a 2014 interview with Kronen Zeitung. Lara’s account of her conversations with him also indicates that he regarded Knaus warmly and said they had remained friends after their divorce.
Their continuing family connection was reinforced by their sons, particularly Mathias, whose racing career kept the Lauda name closely tied to motorsport.
When Niki Lauda died on 20 May 2019, aged 70, the event generated renewed public interest in the people who had shared his life. Knaus nevertheless continued to maintain a much lower profile than many figures connected with his career.

Reliable recent information about Knaus is sparse.
The strongest family-linked evidence found in recent reporting comes from February 2024. In an OE24 interview marking what would have been Niki Lauda’s 75th birthday, Mathias Lauda said he would spend the day with his mother Marlene and other family members on Ibiza.
That confirms her presence there at that time, but it does not establish Ibiza as her permanent residence in 2026.
Separate reporting from February 2024, based on an interview with Mathias, described Knaus as having become very withdrawn after Lauda’s death. That characterization should be understood as a family account rather than a detailed description of her current daily life.
There is no strong recent evidence supporting the numerous online claims that specify her exact current residence, personal fortune or lifestyle. Likewise, the lack of a reliable public birth record means that precise age claims should be treated cautiously.
Her low public visibility is itself one reason such claims proliferate. With relatively little recent first-hand material available, later biography sites have often repeated details from one another without demonstrating where those details originated.
Why the verified record is narrower than the internet version
