Dave Calhoun and Gautam Adani are not publicly documented as business partners, co-investors or personal associates. The clearest connection between them is indirect and runs through the aviation industry: Calhoun led Boeing while Air Works, an Indian maintenance company, was working with Boeing; Adani Defence later pursued and eventually completed a near-total acquisition of Air Works.
The timeline matters. Adani Defence first agreed to buy Air Works in 2022, while Calhoun was still Boeing CEO, but that transaction did not complete. A later deal gave Adani Defence control of Air Works after Calhoun had left Boeing’s CEO role, with its stake reaching 99.98% in March 2026.
The closest documented link: Boeing, Air Works and Adani Defence
Air Works provides the strongest factual bridge between the two men’s professional worlds.
On August 4, 2022, Air Works said it had completed Phase 32 maintenance checks on six Indian Navy P-8I aircraft for Boeing and the Indian Navy. The company described a broader strategic collaboration with Boeing covering P-8I and Boeing Business Jet maintenance. Air Works’ 2022 announcement establishes that the two companies were actively working together while Calhoun was Boeing CEO.
Adani Defence then announced on October 18, 2022 that it had signed definitive agreements to acquire Air Works for an enterprise value of ₹400 crore. Adani’s own announcement noted that Air Works and Boeing were undertaking heavy maintenance checks on Indian Navy P-8I aircraft. The Adani Enterprises announcement confirms the proposed acquisition and the Boeing-Air Works relationship.
That 2022 deal should not be described as a completed takeover. In June 2023, CRISIL reported that the transaction’s long-stop date had expired and that, based on information available at the time, there were no ongoing discussions to extend the term sheet. CRISIL’s Air Works rating rationale resolves an important chronology problem in accounts that simply say Adani bought Air Works in 2022.
A new transaction followed. Adani Defence signed another binding agreement on December 23, 2024 to acquire 85.8% of Air Works. By March 1, 2026, an Adani Enterprises filing said its defence subsidiary already held 85.76% of the company. On March 11, 2026, another filing recorded the completion of an additional share acquisition that increased the stake to 99.98%. Adani’s March 2026 completion filing documents the final ownership position.
That sequence establishes a real Boeing-Air Works-Adani corporate chain. It does not establish that Dave Calhoun and Gautam Adani personally negotiated, directed or participated in a deal together.
Who is Dave Calhoun?
David L. Calhoun is best known for leading Boeing from January 2020 until August 8, 2024. He had already served on Boeing’s board since June 2009.

His corporate career began much earlier. Boeing’s 2023 annual filing says Calhoun spent 26 years at General Electric, where his responsibilities included businesses such as GE Aircraft Engines and GE Transportation. He later held senior roles at Nielsen and then worked at Blackstone, where he headed private-equity portfolio operations before becoming Boeing CEO. Boeing’s 2023 Form 10-K sets out that career chronology.
Virginia Tech, where Calhoun earned an accounting degree in 1979, has also documented a more personal influence on his early career. In an alumni profile, Calhoun credited professor Wayne Leininger’s cost-accounting class with steering his professional direction before he entered GE’s Financial Management Program and later its corporate audit staff. Virginia Tech’s profile of Calhoun provides that first-person background.
His Boeing tenure included one of the most difficult periods in the company’s recent history. After the January 5, 2024 Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 door-plug accident, Boeing came under renewed regulatory and congressional scrutiny. The National Transportation Safety Board later identified Boeing’s inadequate training, guidance and oversight among the central causes of the accident and cited ineffective FAA oversight as a contributing factor. Those were organizational findings, not a finding that Calhoun personally caused the accident. The NTSB’s June 2025 findings provide the official account.
Calhoun also testified before the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on June 18, 2024 in his role as Boeing president and CEO. The Senate hearing record documents that appearance.
Boeing subsequently appointed Kelly Ortberg to succeed him, effective August 8, 2024. Calhoun left the CEO and board roles on that date but remained an employee and senior adviser until his retirement from Boeing on March 1, 2025. Boeing’s July 2024 Form 8-K makes the retirement date explicit.
That filing also corrects a stale claim repeated by some biography sites that Calhoun remained a Boeing adviser in 2026. He did not: his Boeing employment ended in March 2025.
Who is Gautam Adani?
Gautam Adani is the founder and chairman of the Adani Group, an Indian business group with interests spanning infrastructure, logistics, energy, airports, defence and aerospace, among other sectors. Adani Enterprises continued to identify him as chairman and founder as of October 2026. Adani Enterprises’ board profile confirms his current corporate role.

According to Adani’s own corporate history, he began working in the diamond trade in 1978 and founded Adani Exports in 1988. The business later expanded far beyond trading into ports, energy, logistics, airports and other infrastructure.
Aviation has become an increasingly significant part of that portfolio. Adani Airport Holdings says it now has eight airports in its management and development network. Adani’s airports business page also describes a substantial share of passenger and cargo traffic, though those market-share figures are company-reported and should be read as such.
The group has also expanded beyond airport operations into maintenance, pilot training and aerospace manufacturing partnerships. In November 2025, Adani Defence and Prime Aero finalized agreements to acquire a majority stake in Flight Simulation Technique Centre at an enterprise value of ₹820 crore. Adani’s FSTC announcement tied the transaction to an aviation-services platform that includes training and maintenance.
In January 2026, Adani Defence & Aerospace and Embraer announced a memorandum of understanding to develop a regional transport-aircraft ecosystem in India. In February, Embraer said the parties had expanded that understanding to include a proposed E175 final assembly line in the country. Embraer’s February 2026 announcement is important because it describes a proposed project, not an already operational assembly facility.
Adani Defence also signed a February 2026 memorandum with Leonardo aimed at developing a helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in India. These deals show how far Adani’s interests have moved into aerospace, but they involve companies such as Embraer and Leonardo, not Calhoun or Boeing.
Why the two names can appear together
The overlap is easiest to understand at the level of industry, not personal relationship.
Calhoun spent much of his career in aerospace and industrial management, first through GE Aircraft Engines and later at Boeing. Adani, meanwhile, has built an aviation platform that now spans airports, aircraft maintenance, pilot training and aerospace partnerships.
India is another common point of context. While Boeing CEO, Calhoun met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington on June 23, 2023. Boeing said their discussion covered the company’s long-standing aerospace relationship with India and its role in the country’s commercial aviation and defence markets. Boeing’s announcement of the meeting does not name Gautam Adani as a participant.
That distinction is important. Boeing’s presence in India, Adani’s aviation investments and Air Works’ relationships with both corporate ecosystems create legitimate points of overlap. They do not, by themselves, turn Dave Calhoun and Gautam Adani into business partners.
Their current status
As of October 2, 2026, Calhoun is best described as the former president and CEO of Boeing who retired from the company in March 2025. No authoritative post-Boeing operating role relevant to this connection has been publicly established.
Adani remains chairman and founder of the Adani Group, with the group’s aviation interests expanding through airports, Air Works, pilot training and aerospace partnerships. Navi Mumbai International Airport began international flight operations on July 15, 2026, according to Adani Enterprises. The company’s Q1 FY27 results announcement records that date.
The most accurate way to understand Dave Calhoun and Gautam Adani, therefore, is not as a documented pair but as two business figures whose professional worlds touch the same aviation ecosystem. The strongest concrete link runs through Air Works, and even there the chronology shows a company-level connection rather than a confirmed personal partnership.
