David Lawler and Bruce Broussard are senior American business executives whose careers have developed in different industries. David C. Lawler is an energy executive and, as of September 25, 2026, chief executive of Caturus. Bruce D. Broussard, best known for more than a decade leading Humana, is currently serving as interim CEO of HP Inc.

There is no public confirmation that Lawler and Broussard are relatives, and their documented careers do not show a shared employer, board seat, business partnership or corporate transaction. Their names have recently appeared together online, but there is no established public event explaining why they have been paired.

The distinction matters because the David Lawler in this context is also sometimes confused with Dave Lawler, the Axios journalist. David C. Lawler is the energy executive whose career includes Shell, PostRock Energy, SandRidge Energy, BP and Caturus.

Who is David C. Lawler?

David C. Lawler has spent more than three decades in the energy industry, moving from engineering roles into operating leadership and eventually the top U.S. position at BP.

A Denver native, Lawler graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering. He later earned an MBA from Tulane University in 2003.

His current Colorado School of Mines trustee biography says he began his career as a production engineer with Conoco and later worked as a drilling engineer with Burlington Resources. He then spent a decade at Shell Exploration & Production, working in technical and leadership roles connected with the company’s Gulf Coast and deepwater businesses.

Lawler’s early career is important because it established a pattern that continued through his later executive jobs: he remained closely tied to large-scale oil and gas operations rather than moving into a general finance or healthcare career. That point is worth making because some recent online profiles have incorrectly associated him with Humana. His documented career is in energy.

From PostRock and SandRidge to BP

After Shell, Lawler moved into senior management at PostRock Energy and its predecessor businesses. He became president and CEO, giving him experience running an independent energy company before joining SandRidge Energy.

SandRidge appointed Lawler to executive operating roles beginning in 2011, and he became executive vice president and chief operating officer in 2013. Securities filings from the period document the sequence from Shell to PostRock to SandRidge.

In 2014, Lawler joined BP’s U.S. onshore business, later known as bpx energy. He eventually became CEO of bpx, overseeing BP’s unconventional oil, natural gas and midstream operations in the United States.

One of the largest transactions associated with that period was BP’s $10.5 billion acquisition of BHP’s U.S. onshore assets in 2018. BP completed the deal in October of that year, and Lawler’s current institutional biographies identify him as having led the acquisition from the bpx side.

The transaction substantially expanded BP’s U.S. shale position. It also placed Lawler at the centre of one of the company’s biggest acquisitions in more than two decades.

Chairman and President of BP America

Lawler’s remit broadened in 2020 when he became chairman and president of BP America while continuing to lead bpx energy.

That job made him BP’s senior representative in the United States. Colorado School of Mines says his responsibilities covered BP businesses representing roughly 30,000 employees and more than $150 billion of capital deployed in the U.S. since 2005.

His tenure also coincided with BP’s effort to reposition its U.S. operations around a broader energy strategy while retaining large hydrocarbon businesses. Lawler remained chairman and president of BP America until 2023.

In a 2024 interview with Energies Media, he described mentors, his engineering background and exposure to different parts of the energy business as important influences on his career. He also described his own management approach as one that tries to “listen first.” That is best understood as Lawler’s description of how he works rather than an independent assessment of his leadership style.

Caturus and Commonwealth LNG

Lawler returned to a chief executive role in June 2024 when Kimmeridge Texas Gas appointed him CEO.

Kimmeridge was building an integrated natural gas business designed to connect production in Texas with liquefied natural gas exports. At the time, the company also increased its investment in Commonwealth LNG, a proposed export terminal near Cameron, Louisiana.

Lawler’s move gave him responsibility for a business stretching from gas production to planned LNG exports. The company described that strategy as a “wellhead-to-water” model.

In August 2025, the integrated platform was renamed Caturus as part of a transaction involving Mubadala Energy. Lawler remained at the top of the business and is now identified by Caturus as its chief executive.

The company’s most significant project is Commonwealth LNG. In May 2026, Caturus reached a final investment decision on a planned 9.5 million tonnes per annum LNG export facility and announced $9.75 billion in financing for the base project.

A U.S. Department of Energy filing dated June 15, 2026 also identifies Lawler as CEO of Commonwealth LNG.

The project remains under development rather than in operation. Caturus said in September 2026 that construction on the base project was progressing and that operations were targeted for 2030.

That same month, the company announced a further proposed expansion of 7.75 million tonnes per annum. If completed, it would bring planned capacity at the Commonwealth site to about 17.25 million tonnes per annum.

Those figures describe planned capacity, not current LNG production. The expansion also remains a future project rather than an operating facility.

Lawler’s current public roles

As of September 25, 2026, Lawler is CEO of Caturus and is publicly identified as CEO of Commonwealth LNG.

He also remains connected with his alma mater. Colorado School of Mines lists him as a trustee, originally appointed in 2022 and reappointed in 2026, with a term scheduled to run through December 31, 2029.

His trustee biography also lists involvement with the American Petroleum Institute and the Permian Strategic Partnership.

The through-line in Lawler’s career is unusually consistent: engineering, upstream oil and gas operations, large-scale asset management and, more recently, the integration of natural gas production with LNG infrastructure.

Who is Bruce Broussard?

Bruce D. Broussard built his career in healthcare rather than energy. His background combines finance, operations and corporate management, culminating in more than a decade as chief executive of Humana before his 2026 move into the interim CEO role at HP.

Broussard earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and finance from Texas A&M University and an MBA in finance from the University of Houston.

His earlier executive experience included finance and leadership positions at Regency Health Services and Harbor Dental. He then spent roughly 11 years at US Oncology, where he served in roles including chief financial officer, chief executive and chairman.

When US Oncology was sold to McKesson, Broussard moved into McKesson’s specialty pharmacy business.

That sequence gave him a mix of healthcare operating experience and financial management before he joined Humana.

More than a decade at Humana

Broussard joined Humana as president in 2011 and became CEO on January 1, 2013.

His time at the company made him one of the most prominent executives in the U.S. health-insurance sector. Humana’s business is heavily tied to Medicare Advantage and other government-supported healthcare programmes, placing the company at the intersection of insurance, healthcare delivery and public policy.

Broussard remained CEO until July 1, 2024, when Jim Rechtin succeeded him.

His departure was not an immediate clean break from Humana. According to the company’s 2025 proxy statement, Broussard first remained under a strategic-advisory arrangement through March 1, 2025. He then moved into a separate variable-staffing arrangement through March 1, 2026 that included specified advisory and Humana Foundation-related responsibilities.

That detail matters because his post-CEO period is sometimes compressed online into a simple claim that he remained a Humana adviser through 2026. The company’s filings show a more specific two-stage transition.

Board work and Define Ventures

Even before leaving Humana, Broussard had begun taking on board responsibilities outside the company.

HP appointed him to its board of directors in June 2021. That appointment eventually became significant because it gave him several years of familiarity with the technology company before he was asked to run it on an interim basis.

After stepping down from Humana, Broussard also joined Define Ventures as a Venture Partner in October 2024. The healthcare-focused investment firm continues to list him in that role.

In his profile for Define Ventures, Broussard describes healthcare innovation in terms of technology, new business models, partnerships and data-driven approaches. He has also written about leadership as a combination of purpose, strategy, accountability, listening and adaptation.

Those statements reflect his own description of his approach. They are useful context for understanding the areas he chooses to emphasise, but they should not be treated as independent judgments about his record.

Why Bruce Broussard became HP’s interim CEO

On February 3, 2026, HP announced that Broussard had been appointed interim chief executive, effective immediately.

He succeeded Enrique Lores, who stepped down as president and CEO and left the board to pursue another professional opportunity. HP simultaneously formed a search committee to identify a permanent chief executive.

Broussard was therefore appointed as a temporary chief executive rather than immediately being named Lores’s permanent successor.

HP chairman Chip Bergh pointed to Broussard’s operational, financial and management experience and his existing knowledge of HP from his board service. Broussard, meanwhile, described his role as providing stability and continuity while the board conducted its CEO search.

The appointment represented a notable industry shift. Broussard had spent most of his senior career in healthcare, while HP is a global technology company centred on personal computing, printing, workplace technology and related services.

Still, he did not arrive as an outsider to HP itself. By February 2026 he had already served on its board for nearly five years.

Broussard’s current status at HP

As of September 25, 2026, HP continues to identify Bruce Broussard as its interim CEO.

That wording is important. HP announced a formal search for a permanent chief executive when Broussard was appointed, so describing him simply as HP’s permanent CEO would go beyond the company’s current public position.

HP’s August 2026 regulatory and earnings materials still identified him as interim chief executive, and the company’s live governance profile continued to use that title in late September.

His HP biography also lists board service with Marsh McLennan and Takeda, as well as involvement with Cleveland Clinic and other organisations.

Because the permanent CEO search is ongoing, Broussard’s status is one of the few parts of this profile that could change quickly.

Are David Lawler and Bruce Broussard related?

There is no public confirmation that David Lawler and Bruce Broussard are related.

Their established professional histories also do not show a direct business relationship. Lawler’s career has been concentrated in energy companies including Shell, PostRock, SandRidge, BP, Kimmeridge Texas Gas and Caturus. Broussard’s has centred on healthcare through US Oncology, McKesson and Humana before his current role at HP.

No documented shared employer, board membership or disclosed corporate transaction links the two men.

That does not prove that they have never met or have no private connection. It simply means there is no established public relationship that explains why their names are currently appearing together in some online searches.

Why the David Lawler name causes confusion

Part of the confusion around the query may come from the fact that David Lawler is not a unique name.

The executive profiled here is David C. Lawler, the Colorado School of Mines graduate and longtime energy executive now running Caturus.

A different Dave Lawler is a journalist at Axios. Axios identifies him as an editor overseeing web coverage, with bylines on international affairs and other subjects.

There is also inaccurate material circulating online that places David C. Lawler in healthcare or links him with Humana. That biography conflicts with his documented employment record. The energy executive’s career runs through Conoco, Burlington Resources, Shell, PostRock, SandRidge, BP and Caturus.

Where both executives stand now

As of September 25, 2026, David C. Lawler is leading Caturus as it develops Commonwealth LNG and pursues a proposed expansion of the Louisiana export project. The base 9.5 Mtpa project has reached final investment decision and secured announced financing, while the additional 7.75 Mtpa remains a planned expansion.

Bruce Broussard is serving as interim CEO of HP while the company’s board continues the process of identifying a permanent chief executive. His appointment follows a career dominated by healthcare leadership, particularly his 2013–2024 tenure as Humana CEO.

The two men therefore occupy prominent executive roles at the same time, but their public careers remain separate. Lawler’s current work is centred on natural gas and LNG infrastructure; Broussard’s current assignment is the temporary leadership of one of the world’s largest technology companies. There is no established public relationship between them beyond the fact that their names have recently begun appearing together online.
